Hello & Welcome! Zamia (pronounced Zay - Me - Uh) is based in Athens GA and creates artistic documentary style wedding photography in the Atlanta Metro area and beyond. I am thrilled you are here, and invite you to take some time & look through my work. If the imagery strikes a chord with you then let’s start a conversation! The first thing on the list is to reach out and see if your date is available, and the easiest way is to use this contact form. From there we can schedule a phone call, or meet for a coffee or a cocktail if our locations and schedules permit - whatever works best so that we can continue our conversation. I look forward to getting to know you!
Meet Rory
Hello. I'm Rory, owner and primary photographer at Zamia. I live in Athens GA with my wife, and our 7 year old daughter. I am originally from Northern California, but have also lived in Boston, and Upstate NY. Lately when I’m not photographing there is a good chance of finding me in a kayak, or cooking a meal as I am the family chef.
I am a formally educated photographer with a history of documentary projects, as well as years of professional event photography experience. I have also been employed as a photo retoucher and restorer at a commercial photo lab.
ZAMIA (it’s a plant)
The inspiration for the name came from a trip my wife Shayla and I took together. This was a few years ago, a little while before the birth of our daughter Laurel (we’re big on plant names). Shayla is a biologist and does research on Zamia, a rare, prehistoric, and poisonous species. One of its more fascinating behaviors is the way it attracts pollinator insects - thermogenesis. Which means that the plant generates its own heat. Our search through the Amazon was an amazing journey, not without some level of adversity, but worth it all and more. I carried my cameras through the jungle and on city busses alike documenting the entire mission, and eventually I made the collection into a book titled simply 'Looking for Zamia'. I want to put the same love and energy into documenting big memorable experiences in my clients lives as well. Knowing these images will be held near and dear into the distant future inspires me.
